Sad Story of the Conceicao 1555

Sad Story of the Conceicao 1555

£10

Manoel Rangel’s story, here translated into English for the first time, is one of a compendium of Portuguese maritime disasters released by the Vatican in the 18th century, and the only one that involved the Chagos islands. While only one person lost his life when the Conceição was stranded in 1555, the sufferings undergone by the survivors were utterly heart-rending: the majority starved on the spot, but three separate boatloads succeeded in reaching the Portuguese settlements of South-west India. This book sets these events in their historical context, and ends with a detailed study of the conflicting evidence about where exactly the Conceição met her end.
